Handwriting
Neatness and legibility of penmanship is taught, expected, and stressed through daily drill as part of our K-5 Spalding program.

Pencil Grip is Correct
- The middle finger and thumb should form a vise for holding the pencil.
- The index finger rests between the middle finger and thumb. The index finger curves, and the end of the nail sits on the pencil where the paint ends, about an inch from the point.
- All knuckles, including the thumb, should be bent. (Please scroll down to see the image at the bottom of the page.)
- Letters should be formed close together, but not touching.
- Letters should be uniform in size and consistently sized across the page. Short letters are half the size of tall letters.
- Start at 2 on the clock and go up and around the clock. Letters: o, a, c, d, g, f, s, qu
- These approach the top line without touching it.
- These start at the midpoint.
- The line starts at the midpoint and extends the same distance below the baseline.
- Letters are not floating or sinking.
