Cash prizes will be awarded to students and their schools. First place winners will receive $100 and the school will receive $1000; second place, $75 and $750; and third place, $50 and $500. In addition, the first place winners in each grade will be invited to read their essays at the 2016 fall conference of the Utah League of Cities and Towns. Past winners have had their photographs taken with the Governor.
If you are interested in participating, please follow the guidelines below.
- Write an essay (250-450 words) about your community or neighborhood and what living in those places means to you. Possible areas that could be discussed are: Geography, community activities, uniqueness, economy, people, annual events, neighborhood history, family history, etc.
- Essays will be typed or written in blue or black ink.
- The essays will be judged on the following criteria: 1) The content relates to the community and the student's views 2) Essay has a logical development and ideas clearly built on each other 3) Mechanics such as usage, punctuation, capitalization, sentence structure 4) Adherence to the guidelines 5) Descriptive quality 6) Student voice (Does it sound like a student wrote it?)
- ONLY ONE ENTRY PER CLASS WILL BE ACCEPTED
- All essays must be submitted to Mrs. Hadsell by Friday, February 26th
- The ULCT Review Committee will make its final selections no later than May 1, 2016
